Professional Chimney Inspections by Baker Chimney
We Have Been Providing Chimney Inspections For Over 20 Years!
Since 2001, the Baker Team has been performing professional chimney inspections for homeowners throughout Maine. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that every chimney be inspected before purchasing a home and then at least once every 12 months. Even if you rarely use your chimney, inspections are still necessary. Over time, heat, smoke, fumes, and dust particles collect inside, causing buildup that can restrict airflow or lead to fire hazards. Chimney inspections are not a do-it-yourself project. They should be performed by a knowledgeable and qualified chimney inspector who knows how to recognize problems that may not be obvious to the untrained eye. An inspection is about more than just cleanliness—it is about protecting your home from damage and preventing the risk of fire. A proper inspection will also determine whether there is any physical damage in the firebox, flue, or chimney structure, while evaluating overall stability and checking for leaks, cracks, creosote buildup, or blockages.
There are three levels of chimney inspections recommended by the CSIA, each addressing a different need for homeowners.
Level 1 chimney inspection is the most basic type of inspection and should be performed annually if your system has not changed and you have not experienced any issues. This level includes a general examination of the accessible portions of the chimney’s physical structure. The inspector will assess the flue liner, joints, interior walls, and chimney crown. A Level 1 inspection also helps identify soot accumulation or points of obstruction that could restrict airflow and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
Level 2 chimney inspection is more detailed and is required in specific circumstances, such as when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, or following severe weather or structural damage. This inspection uses specialized tools and video equipment to look inside areas that are not visible during a Level 1 inspection. The goal is to identify hidden structural weaknesses, cracks, or other problems that may compromise the safety and stability of the chimney.
Level 3 chimney inspection is the most comprehensive and is only performed when serious issues are suspected that cannot be fully evaluated through Levels 1 or 2. This inspection may involve removing some parts of the chimney or surrounding structure to access concealed areas. It is rarely needed but is essential in uncovering severe hidden damage that could pose a risk to your home.
Most homes only require a Level 1 inspection if the chimney has no known issues. However, regardless of the level, annual inspections should never be skipped. When you call Baker Chimney, you know you are working with a qualified chimney inspection company that has the training, credentials, and experience to keep your home safe. An inspection today provides peace of mind for the future, ensuring that your chimney is clean, structurally sound, and ready for use whenever you need it.
